As much as possible, we believe in providing a natural environment for our flock of Icelandic sheep. You can pamper your flock if you choose to. However, lambs you purchase from us will have been born in the pasture and get plenty of exercise. They walk a fair distance between their pasture and their shelter and water.

The flock enjoys some wooded, rolling pasture for browsing (nibbling on) a wide variety of plants. Their primary diet is a mixture of grasses, alfalfa, and clover. Free choice hay and sheep salt/minerals are always available. Also, we are enrolled in the Scrapie Flock Certification Progam.

Icelandic sheep are an excellent choice for the hand-spinners, weavers, knitters, felters, to gourmet cooks and restaurants, dairies and artisian cheese-makers.

Icelandic sheep are one of the oldest and purest sheep breeds in the world today. The breed was isolated throughout its 1100 years of history. When the Vikings settled in what is now known as Iceland they brought this North European short-tailed breed with them. Icelandic sheep are prolific lambers with rates commonly in the 175%- 220% range. Gestation is approximately 144 days. Lambs are generally 5 - 7 pounds and are up and nursing within moments of birth. Ewe lambs can give birth at 11-12 months of age. They are very maternal, bonding quickly, and are very watchful of their young.

Having evolved in the difficult farming conditions of Iceland, this breed is the epitome of "low maintenance".They survived on pasture when available and hay in the winter. They love to browse brush, bushes, and low tree limbs also.

Though famous throughout the world for wool production, the Icelandic breed is predominately grown for meat in Iceland. The Icelandic breed is considered a mountain breed, and historically mountain breeds have been milder in flavor, and leaner than the lowland breeds. The meat is indeed very tender with a mild flavor, and is generally described as gourmet meat.
